My Hair Care Routine: UPDATED

 So if you all remember this post from 2012 >> yikes << its been a while since I have written about my hair care routine and it has changed a bit. My hair is darker now as well as much longer. I still cant get over that it was 2012 when I wrote that. Definitely one of my more popular posts so I thought I would update you all on what I currently do for my hair. Still very simple.

SO I have worked at a salon now for over a year and pretty much that entire time I had them wash my hair about 2-3 times a week for me because of our insanely horrible water pressure and my small shower head. When you have this much hair, it takes like 45 mins to completely rinse everything out. I ain't got time for that!!!!

So things that are the same: I still wash my hair 2-3 or maybe more times a week. It depends on how nasty I get during crossfit ;)

Things that have changed: I am now addicted to this vegan hair care line Framesi
I use the 'color lover' pink ones because that was recommended to me by the ladies at my beauty supply store. I don't think they sell this line in stores but online and at cosmetology professional beauty supply stores. It is the best shampoo/conditioner combo I've ever used! Makes my hair so soft and shiny. I get so many compliments on my hair. So go get ya some here! and thank me later!!!!!

Now that is what I use IN the shower, now after I get out all I do is spray in some of the best leave in conditioner ever..... the original It's a 10! Literally, the best leave in conditioner ever. If you haven't tried it you need to.
After I spray and de-tangle with this amazing brush I put my hair in a topknot and sleep in it.
Prior to blowing out, I put some CapriClear from my last post, or my favorite Redken product Diamond Oil. Depending on what mood I'm it, I'll switch between the two. And of course, I finish my hair with the oils as well for a silky smooth look.

Below are some recent shots of my hair haha
It's funny, when I started this blog I had short blonde hair and now it is long and dark, my how things have changed!

I think the key to the health of your hair is minimal product use and minimal heat. I only blowout like twice a week and curl once and fix certain pieces throughout the week. Less heat and more products without silicones and sulfates is key to long, healthy hair!!!!

My Hair Care Routine

 UPDATED----> Click Here!

Soooo I have been asked on Instagram >> naturallyem <<  to do like a "hair care" type post. I always love reading how bloggers take care of their hair. Weird right? I don't really know why, its just like my obsession with 'what's in my bag' posts or videos too haha. It is just cool to see other gal's routines.
I am going to show you what products I use, how often I wash my hair, my biotin supplement, etc. etc.

First off, I was a blonde baby so most of my life I have gotten highlights like every 6 or so weeks and seriously, blondes out there, that really takes a toll on the health of your hair. I was so exhausted from hair color and spending the money that I just quit going to the salon. My roots grew out wayy too long so I decided to dye it all my natural color. This led to an unintentional ombre type effect which I ended up loving. SO for now, I'm keeping it, lol. I have always felt taking exceptional care of my hair and my skin are top priorities because guess what ladies, those are the only 2 things we can't take off at night.

How often do I wash my hair?
-Um, like once a week for real! The picture below is of day 5 hair. I loveeee using dry shampoo, it is practically my bestie during the week. I like trying out different, organic powder {{ talc free }} dry shampoos. I don't like the aerosol ones very much, too many chemicals for me. I guess its the same reason I don't use hairspray haha. I think the trick is using very little product.

What kind of weekly treatment do I do?
-I use a coconut oil overnight hair mask or I'll use this or this {{ which I get from TJ Maxx }} deep conditioning treatment overnight as well. I did do a previous post on my overnight hair masks, but this post will be a lot more comprehensive as to what else I do to keep my locks healthy and new :)

So, do you take any hair boosting supplements?
-I have heard amazing things about this hair supplement called Viviscal that apparently all the models take to make their hair grow?! I have never put the money into trying it, perhaps one day. Now, my hair grows really, and I mean really fast. Last summer I cut it ALL off. Heres proof haha. I won't ever do it again! I figure I should do it once in my life, but I love my long hair way too much. I feel naked without it! I kept telling my mom that I feel like a boy with that hair cut ;/
But anyway, back to supplements. I take this Biotin supplement. So far I am loving it, plus its good for you skin and nails too, win-win.

[[ short and blonde last summer ]]

How often do you use heat on your hair?
-This I think is the hardest part. I only use a blow dryer once a week and a curling iron to curl once, then for touch ups throughout the week. Does that make sense? I try to use as little heat as possible. Sometimes I'll put it in a braid, sleep on it, then take the braid out and curl some pieces. I have a cool iron that has different size barrels you can change for different looks, I think that is the best bet instead of having multiple curling irons to lug around.

So exactly what products do you use on your hair?
-Virtually, none! But, after washing my hair, I like to put a dime size amount of this organic thickening compound
{{ I think it is discontinued but it is on Hautelook all the time! }} before I blow out. Once dry I like to spray my fave shine spray and work it through the bottom half of my hair. It is made with Argan Oil which is one of my all time favorite things! Sometimes I mix it with the thickening compound before the blow out too, depends on my mood :D

{{ Bracelet }}

{{ Day 6 Hair!!! }}

What do you do if it's raining? Do you ever put your hair up?
- So my hair is very temperamental the first day or two I wash it haha. I have naturally curly hair so it can frizz, usually it doesn't if I use some of this serum on the bottom half of my hair. BUT, if it's raining and I'm on day 5/6 hair I'll put it in a sock bun because its a super cute way to wear your hair up and it's literally the easiest thing to do on the planet! So above, you see my sock bun from today, I'll probably wear it like this for another day.

So that is my hair care routine! It has worked for me for the past year or so and though washing your hair once a week may not be for everyone. The reason people think that you need to wash your hair everyday is that your roots get greasy and dirty right? Well thats because non-organic shampoos contain harsh sulfates that strip your lovely locks of your natural root oils [ which you need! ]
Perhaps this post was informative to you and I hope you enjoyed it!

Summer-ize Your Skin Care Routine

Just like we take the layers off in the summer, we need to do the same with our skin care! This is mucho important. In the summer we're sweating more, and usually tend to have oilier skin. I am going to show you some of the products I use on my face in the summertime.

 Cleanser: It's very important in the summer to lighten up your cleanser! Use one with tea tree or salicylic acid to keep your oil at bay. I use this one year round because I have combo/acne prone skin! I got this huge bottle on Vitacost for a very good deal.

Toner: This is a must year round, but a toner with moisturizing and balancing ingredients is great for the summer. Some people forget we need to re-balance our skin after cleansing! And this is how you do it!

Moisturizer: Crucial and very important! One thing I don't understand is why people with oilier skin don't want to use moisturizer!! Oily skin needs moisturizer as much as dry skin, here's why. When people with oily/combo skin don't use a moisturizer, its like telling your oil glands to go into overdrive to produce MORE oil!! But more on that in another post. I just found the amazing organic brand Acure Organics, and let me tell you I'm obsessed! Its organic AND such a good price point! A good oil control facial moisturizer is crucial for a summer skin care routine to keep it all balanced.

Mechanical Exfoliation

In the summer (and year round too!) exfoliation is key to glowing, beautiful skin! I use my Clarisonic Mia at night to help remove the excess dirt and debris that my cleanser can miss. I also use the sensitive skin head so it does not irritate my skin. If you are more sensitive maybe do this two or three times a week. Once you get a Clarisonic, you can never go back!

Chemical Exfoliation

Also important is chemical exfoliation. It goes deeper into the layers and provides an anti-aging effect too. These extra strength may be too much for some people, they also have a regular one which I used for 3 or so months before I started on the extra strength. It has helped with my post inflammatory hyperpigmentation too. BUT when using this you must pair it with a sunscreen during the day. Also, use this 2 step system at night, not in the morning! Your cells repair and turn over much faster when we are sleeping.

Sunscreen: The MOST important summer skin care staple! I got it for a discount on this website. It is a complete mineral block and it does not smell like sunscreen at all! I put this on before applying my makeup and let it sink in for 5 or so minutes. Using sunscreen everyday for me is a total must year round, but I make sure to never get lazy in the summer. It has the coolest gel like consistency and it semi mattifies after sinking in. This is the best sunblock I've ever used.

If you have any questions do not hesitate to ask!
